THE TOWN OF PALAIOXORA

Palaioxora is located on the hill behind the Monastery of Saint Nektarios. It's an old town that resembles to Mistra with many churches and ruins from houses.

About 20 churches have been saved over the years with remarkable murals but unfortunately they aren't in a very good condition. The town was built by the inhabitants of Aegina in order to protect themselves from the marine raids by the pirates of Sarakinon.

For many centuries, it was the capital of the island. It was abandoned though in the early 19th century, because the inhabitants returned to the seaside areas to live. In Palaioxora there are many wells with a lot of water.

At the highest point of the town, there is a castle which has a fantastic view to the sea. Finally, you can see the ruins from the walls and the water tanks.
